Opening Ceremony Held for the Technology Workshop of the Departments of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mining Engineering

The Opening Ceremony of the Technology Workshop of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and the Department of Mining Engineering within our University’s Faculty of Engineering was held with the participation of our Rector, Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Çuvalcı. It was emphasized that the Technology Workshop would make significant contributions to both our academic staff and students in keeping pace with technological and scientific developments. The workshop was noted as a crucial step toward achieving the short- and long-term goals that have been identified. These goals include:

  • Teaching, implementing, and advancing design and manufacturing techniques that meet the requirements of the 21st century, while creating an environment where new and advanced manufacturing technologies and product/device prototypes can be developed and produced;
  • Bringing together academic staff and students to shape educational processes in line with emerging technologies, ensuring the transfer and monitoring of new manufacturing technologies within the field, and training future engineers equipped with the competencies required by the modern era;
  • Conducting multidisciplinary studies within the scope of international accreditation (MÜDEK) to ensure the continuity of accreditation processes, while contributing to the development and registration of products and devices that enhance local, national, and international recognition, as well as increasing the number of scientific publications and projects;
  • Developing an “R&D Engineer Training Model” that will serve as a foundation for local, national, and international projects and competitions, including Project Markets, TEKNOFEST, TÜBİTAK 2209, TÜBİTAK 1501/1505/1509, BİDEP 2244, TUSAÅž LiftUp, LiftUp+, BAP09, and similar initiatives; strengthening the institution’s reputation, visibility, success, outputs, and attractiveness through a multidisciplinary research and development infrastructure designed to position it at the forefront of engineering education and innovation;
  • Increasing the number of patents and utility model registrations, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration within national and international accreditation (MÜDEK) processes, facilitating solutions to complex engineering problems, supporting teamwork, and establishing infrastructure that encompasses the entire process from design to manufacturing, manufacturing to assembly, and assembly to multidisciplinary products and devices;
  • Establishing the infrastructure necessary for the practical implementation of engineering courses and transforming project outcomes into tangible products through the redesign and improvement of existing products and devices;
  • Providing facilities where the stages of thinking, designing, manufacturing, and development can be integrated; introducing additive manufacturing technologies as one of the major developments of the last century; promoting the learning and teaching of rapid prototyping systems through the widespread use of additive manufacturing; and integrating research, development, design, and production processes into a streamlined system through the incorporation of advanced devices and equipment;
  • Introducing and providing training on a wide range of machinery and equipment within the workshop, including machining equipment (electric mini lathes, milling machines, drills), joining technologies (welding and soldering), assembly units, and additive manufacturing systems (3D printers), while enabling the selection of appropriate production processes, the design and manufacture of complex geometries, and reductions in labor requirements.

In his address during the ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Çuvalcı stated that the newly established Technology Workshop aims to support the development of local, national, and international projects, patents, utility models, and scientific publications focused on the production of innovative products and devices for the aerospace, healthcare, pharmaceutical, biomaterials, biomedical, automotive, defense, space, and manufacturing sectors. He further emphasized that the workshop would facilitate participation in local, national, and international project markets and competitions, support the production of industry-oriented undergraduate and graduate theses, help students realize their ambitions and contribute to major projects, and ultimately transform the Departments of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mining Engineering, as well as the University itself, into a center of excellence that will enhance their attractiveness in the years ahead.

Prof. Dr. Çuvalcı stated: “In order to keep pace with advancing technology, we have established a state-of-the-art Research and Development Workshop for our Departments of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Mining Engineering, which we aim to elevate to the highest levels of success. Through this initiative, we will contribute not only to our departments and university but also to our city, region, and country. By striving to remain at the forefront in national and international arenas, we will continue to open new horizons from the summit.”

At the Opening Ceremony of the Technology Workshop, which is the first facility of its kind established within the engineering faculties of our University, Prof. Dr. Aykut Çanakçı, Head of the Department, also shared his thoughts and expressed his gratitude: “We are grateful to our Rector for supporting us in bringing this project to fruition. We have always worked, and will continue to work, to realize projects of this nature for the benefit of our youth, who represent our future, as long as we receive support. We will continue to dedicate our efforts and determination to the advancement of our country and the shaping of our future. Through this workshop, prototypes designed within both academic and student projects can be produced rapidly, flexibly, and cost-effectively. Being a member of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is a privilege. Our goal is to open new horizons from the summit. Continue to follow our work.”

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the establishment of the Technology Workshop and helped bring this valuable facility to our University, academic staff, and students. We wish them continued success in their future endeavors.
