History of the Antiquity
Historical Background
The Division of History of the Antiquity is a sub-department of the History Department, established in 1994 at Karadeniz Technical University. The department has been offering master's degree programs since 1998, doctoral programs since 2006, and courses specifically focused on the History of the Antiquity since 2011.
General Overview
History of the Antiquity examines political, social, cultural, and economic events in the Ancient Eastern and Ancient Western worlds from the advent of writing to the beginning of the Middle Ages, utilizing scientific methods. The Division of History of the Antiquity focuses on the civilizations of Ancient Middle East, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Aegean, and the Mediterranean, delving deep into the events of those periods, studying the rich cultural heritage through written, archaeological, epigraphic, and numismatic sources. The department provides education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
Vision and Mission
The vision of the department is to ensure the acquisition of systematic and chronological knowledge about History of the Antiquity through courses starting from undergraduate level. The aim is to prepare students who will specialize in History of the Antiquity by providing general information about the field along with the courses specifically focused on the History of the Antiquity. In this regard, the department intends to keep pace with contemporary academic research by utilizing the sources related to ancient civilizations and become a prominent authority in History of the Antiquity.
