Karadeniz Technical University – Department of International Relations Best Doctoral Dissertation Awards

KTU Department of International Relations has decided to award original and promising doctoral thesis every year according to their contribution to the field of Political Science and International Relations since 2017.

Requirements to nomination for the 2023 Best Doctoral Dissertation Award:

* The nominated thesis must be written in Turkish or English at the universities in the Republic of Turkey;

* Thesis must have been successfully defended between 01 June 2022 and 30 July 2023;

* PDF version of the thesis should be sent electronically to aeminoglu@ktu.edu.tr or hulya.ercan@ktu.edu.tr, and two printed theses should be sent to KTU, İİBF, Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü, 61080, Trabzon/Turkey with the NOMINATION FORM.

** Deadline for nominations: 1 August 2023

** The award is 2000 TL and the winning candidate will be awarded at the Political Science and International Relations Congress organized by the KTU-Department of International Relations.

 

Award Winners:

2021 – Dr. Adem Özer

He received the award for his doctoral thesis titled “Autonomous Weapon Systems in the context of International Humanitarian Law (Jus in bello)" which was completed under the supervision of Prof. Fatma Taşdemir in Gazi University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of International Relations

Award was presented in the congress by Prof. Cemil Rakıcı after the keynote speech of Prof. Mustafa Aydın.

 

2021 – Dr. Çağdaş Duman

He received the award for his doctoral thesis titled “Transformative impact of political shocks over violent non-state actors: The case of Lebanon Hezbollah (2005-2020)" which was completed under the supervision of Prof. Aydın Ibrahimov and co-supervision Assoc. Prof. Gökay Özerim in Ege University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of International Relations

Award was presented in the congress (online) after the keynote speeches of Prof. Oliver Richmond and Prof. Hüseyin Bağcı.

 

2019 – Dr. Hasan Deniz Pekşen

He received the award for his doctoral thesis titled “The Hybridization of Armed Conflicts, Power Pendulums: A Cost Based Analysis (1945-2015)” which was completed under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Menent Savaş Cazala in Galatasaray University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of International Relations

Award was presented by Prof. Dr. Ziya Öniş.

 

2018 – Dr. Elçin Doruk

She received the award for her doctoral thesis titled “Governing of global commons in the scope of international regime: The case of Antarctica" whic was completed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Siret Hürsoy in Ege University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of International Relations.

Award was presented by Prof. Dr. Ersel Aydınlı.

 

2017 – Dr. Yusuf Çınar

He received the award for his doctoral thesis titled “Rehabilitation process in the phase of transforming conflict: The case of Northern Ireland” which was completed under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nezir Akyeşilmen at Selçuk University, Graduate School of Social Science Sciences, Department of International Relations.

Award was presented by Prof. Dr. Hikmet Öksüz.
