Department of Naval Architecture, within the body of Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences, was established in 1996 and started education in the 1996-1997 academic year. Since 2009, the name of the department has been changed to Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. There are three departments in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, namely Marine Hydromechanics, Naval Architecture, and Marine Engines. A Master's program was opened on 26.02.2009, and a PhD program was opened on 19.06.2014 within the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department is located in Çamburnu Campus of Sürmene District. In the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; There are a total of 15 academic staff, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 doctoral lecturers and 3 research assistants (14.10.2024).

Compulsory and elective courses in naval architecture, marine engineering and social fields are taught during the 4-year undergraduate education in the department, where approximately 60 students start their education with an adequate score between 450-390 points from the YKS-Quantitative score type. In addition, the students of the department can study in a minor or double major program in another suitable undergraduate program.

It is obligatory for the students of the department to do their internship for a total of 60 days, consisting of 3 groups of 20 working days, in domestic or abroad shipyards for practical and applied education.

Department students can use the laboratories in the Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences, with General Purpose Computer Laboratory, Ship Propulsion Systems Laboratory and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering R&D Laboratory. Also, Department students can use the laboratories in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with Material Laboratory, Engines Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Hydraulic Machines Laboratory, Vibration Laboratory and Computer Laboratory.

Since its establishment, our department has graduated 867, including 823 undergraduate, 30 masters, and 14 doctoral degrees. Today, as of 14.10.2024, it continues its education with a total of 366 students, 342 of which are undergraduate, 15 masters, and 9 doctoral students.

Our department, which continues its education and training activities, trains engineers who can design and assemble all kinds of marine vehicles and machinery systems in a way that creates the most economical product by using up-to-date technology.

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department aims to train efficient engineers who can easily adapt to the developments around them. Graduates of the department find a place for themselves in shipyards in various regions of our country and in a wide range of maritime jobs.

Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences, which is intertwined with nature, has an indoor sports hall, outdoor basketball, volleyball and football fields, two dining halls and a canteen for students to benefit from.

In addition, the KTU SDBF Marine Technologies and Naval Architecture Student Club, which was established in 2003 to provide and increase the relations between the students, the naval architecture industry, alumni, and themselves, provides the development of the department by organizing many social and scientific activities.
