What Do Software Engineers Do?

Software Engineers can be involved in any step of the software development process in many sectors. The stages followed while developing software are programming, design, analysis and testing. In the program section, the software engineer determines the requirements for a program that is suitable for the needs and wishes of the target audience and develops software together with the programmers accordingly. The program written in the design section provides more visualization of the interface according to the wishes of the end user. In the test section, it monitors and improves the working performance of the programs to be delivered to the user or updated after delivery, in line with the requests and needs. In the analysis part, it conducts research for the programs developed and planned to be developed, and analyzes the data of previous programs statistically. Through this review, it identifies the positive aspects and the aspects that need improvement. Increases professional competencies by making use of the results obtained and eliminating the deficiencies. In this way, it contributes to the creation of a more solid foundation when starting new projects.

Working Opportunities

Software engineering graduates have the potential to work in a wide range of fields. While most of them work in a wide range of private-sector companies, they are also employed in the public sector. Graduates can also start their own businesses or work abroad. In addition, the fields of study are changing day by day depending on the needs of people and different disciplines.

Software engineers work in jobs like software developer, software and database programmer/expert/architect/analyst, software support specialist, software designer, software project manager, data mining specialist/consultant, data scientist/engineer, software developer in different environments such as computer, mobile and embedded, system programmer / specialist / consultant, systems analyst / development specialist / programmer / designer / specialist / consultant, game / mobile software development specialist, business intelligence specialist / consultant, information security / cyber security specialist, cloud computing / big data specialist / consultant, computer network analyst/manager, R&D engineer, software engineering education instructor/personnel.

Our Goal as KTU Software Engineering

Software engineers develop software using programming languages as well as examining the requirements, design, and structure of the system to be created in line with the needs of the users. Many software engineers create new software and designs, taking into account end users and target audiences, and improve existing software to meet end-user needs.

Today, technological developments are advancing at a rapid pace. It is one of the primary goals of every country to keep up with this progress and not to lag behind innovations. Especially recently, with the introduction of artificial intelligence, computer and software technologies have been actively used in many areas from health to robotics, from data science to defense. As a result of this, software engineering has become an important building block in the advancement of many basic technologies in the developing and changing world. Today, it is a department that is highly preferred and needs trained personnel. Therefore, there is a great need for engineers in this field.

As the department, we aim to be an important part of the progress in the software sector, on behalf of our country, with the graduates we train and the work we do, by keeping up with the changing education system and preparing our students in the best and most equipped way for both the future and the business world.
