Building on brownfield sites

Faculty of Dentistry

Due to the inability of the current Faculty of Dentistry to meet the increasing demand from students and patients, a new faculty building has been designed. The design was inspired by the architectural character of the campus, originating from competitions and constructions in the 1960s.

The sloped topography of the site was utilized to arrange entrances for different functions at varying levels. Since both education and healthcare services are carried out simultaneously in dental faculties, the workflow between patients, dentists, and students was a decisive factor in the design. In addition, an atrium on the ground floor, serving heavily used spaces and providing a focal point for the upper floors, was planned as a shared hub for all units.

Children’s Hospital

Farabi Hospital, which opened in 1986 with a capacity of 600 beds, was later expanded to 800 beds. As the current facility reached full capacity, the KTU Children’s Hospital was built on the eastern section of the development axis located south of the existing hospital.

The newly designed hospital has a capacity of 225 beds and includes clinics, polyclinics, diagnostic, and treatment units. With a total indoor area of 34,800 m², the facility provides 155 m² per inpatient bed.
