Education for SDGs commitment to meaningful education

Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) conducts its education, research, and community engagement activities with a holistic approach aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The University aims to raise strong awareness among students about sustainability and to educate competent individuals in this field. Through curriculum integration, field practices, research projects, and community service activities, students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also acquire practical skills.

Seminars, panels, workshops, and international events organized at KTU provide both academics and students with opportunities to follow the latest developments in sustainability and to translate this knowledge into practice. These efforts clearly demonstrate KTU’s determination to be a pioneering higher education institution contributing to sustainable development.

Curriculum & Academic Programs

KTU has structured its education and research activities in line with the SDGs to provide students with a broad perspective on sustainability. Out of a total of 5,133 courses in the University’s course catalog, 1,637 are directly related to sustainability. This figure shows that sustainability issues are an integral part of the curriculum. Undergraduate Programs

At the undergraduate level, programs such as Urban and Regional Planning, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Landscape Architecture, and Wildlife Ecology and Management are directly linked to sustainability. In addition, the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy are closely aligned with sustainable development themes.

Graduate Programs

At the graduate level, KTU offers master’s programs in Environmental Sciences, Energy Systems Engineering, Urban Design, Wildlife Ecology and Management, Public Health, Migration Studies, and Women and Family Studies, among others—all of which directly contribute to SDG-related fields.

Doctoral Programs

At the doctoral level, programs such as Renewable Energy Resources/Technologies, Obesity-Diabetes and Atherosclerosis Metabolism, and Gender Studies are directly aligned with the SDGs.

This wide range of programs demonstrates that KTU does not confine sustainability education to a few fields but addresses it through a multidisciplinary approach—from engineering to health, from social sciences to natural sciences. In this way, the University has built strong institutional capacity to train qualified human resources for sustainable development.
