Education for SDGs in the wider community (2025)

In 2025, our University carried out educational, informational, and awareness-raising activities for local residents, children, young people, individuals with special needs, healthcare users, and different segments of the wider community, with the aim of ensuring that knowledge and awareness related to the Sustainable Development Goals extended beyond the student population. These activities covered a range of SDG-related areas, including health, disaster preparedness, environmental sustainability, healthy living, and social inclusion.

Health Education and Awareness Activities for Local Residents

The Department of Nursing at KTU Faculty of Health Sciences organised public health education activities at Trabzon Forum Shopping Mall on 17–19 March 2025, which were directly accessible to the local community.

During these activities, local residents received education on protecting lung health, hypertension and heart attack, early diagnosis of cancer, and cancer screening methods. In addition, the blood pressure of approximately 700 people was measured, and participants were informed about their health status. This activity represents a direct educational and community outreach initiative aimed at improving health literacy, particularly under SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being.

Disaster Awareness Education for Children and the Local Community

Through institutional cooperation with the Trabzon Provincial Directorate of National Education, our University’s Landslide Application and Research Center continued to provide Disaster Awareness Training for primary and secondary school students in 2025.

Within this framework, training sessions were delivered at Kutlugün Primary School on 14 May 2025, TED Trabzon College on 17 October 2025, and Osman Altıntaş Secondary School on 17 December 2025. These programmes aimed to raise awareness among children and young people regarding disaster risks, preparedness, safe behaviour, and community resilience.

It was also reported that, through the University’s disaster awareness activities in 2025, approximately 1,000 students in more than 20 schools were reached. These educational activities are particularly related to SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13 – Climate Action.

Oral and Dental Health Education for Individuals with Special Needs

Our University also carries out education and healthcare outreach activities for disadvantaged groups and individuals with special needs. Under the “Protocol for Supporting Social Projects and Organising Educational Seminars” signed between KTU Faculty of Dentistry and the Trabzon City Council, oral and dental health screening and information activities were provided for students with special needs in 2025.

For example, at Beşikdüzü Sevim Nerim Demircioğlu Special Education School, students with special needs received oral and dental health screenings and information on preventive oral healthcare. Similar educational and awareness activities were also conducted at different special education institutions throughout the year.

These activities directly contribute to SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 4 – Quality Education, and SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities.

Sustainability Education Open to the Wider Community

Throughout 2025, our University also organised educational activities, seminars, and publicly accessible broadcasts on topics such as zero waste, global warming, sustainable living, healthy nutrition, climate change, and environmental awareness.

KTU’s 2025 sustainability events calendar included several community awareness activities, including the Zero Waste Training Series, “Causes of Global Warming,” “Healthy Nutrition and Active Living,” and “Ageing, Ageing in Place and the Design of Living Environments.” Through radio and television broadcasts and online activities, these educational contents were also made accessible to wider audiences beyond the campus community.

These activities demonstrate that, in 2025, our University did not limit SDG-related education to formal academic programmes, but provided education and awareness programmes that directly reached local residents, children, young people, individuals with special needs, and other segments of the wider community.

Through health education, disaster awareness, environmental sustainability initiatives, and inclusive community activities, our University contributed to improving knowledge, awareness, and community capacity, particularly in relation to SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 10, SDG 11, SDG 12, and SDG 13.
