As of 2024, there are 91 disabled individuals at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU). The Disadvantaged Groups Unit established within the university aims to identify the obstacles preventing students with disabilities from pursuing their academic lives in an equal and effective manner and to remove these obstacles within the realm of possibility. It also seeks to organize teaching programs that positively affect the academic, physical, psychological, and social lives of students with disabilities, and to prepare educational environments, tools, and equipment suitable for their needs.
Karadeniz Technical University has taken many steps to facilitate the education and social life of disadvantaged individuals across the university. For example, a certain portion of parking areas for educational and social spaces across the campus has been reserved for individuals with disabilities. Ramps (slopes) have been installed in both indoor and outdoor areas to support circulation. In addition, elevators or stair lifts are available in campus buildings. Other spatial applications include disabled toilets, yellow tactile paving for visually impaired individuals, and electric vehicle charging stations.
Some of the buildings on campus also facilitate disabled access either because they are designed with fewer floors or because of the leveling solutions implemented. In short, all buildings and public open spaces at KTU Kanuni Campus offer inclusive access solutions for individuals with disabilities through various architectural and infrastructural approaches.
