Karadeniz Technical University (KTU), within the framework of its sustainability vision, considers the fight against climate change as one of its priority areas. Undergraduate and graduate programs offer courses on climate change in disciplines such as environment, energy, biology, and urban planning, enabling students to gain knowledge on scientific foundations, impacts, and solution strategies.
In addition, awareness trainings are provided for both students and the community through seminars, panels, and online broadcasts organized by the Zero Waste Coordination Unit, the Environmental Problems Research and Application Center, and student clubs. In this way, KTU contributes to combating climate change both academically and socially.
On the occasion of World Climate Day, May 15, the Nursing Department’s Vocational Education and Development Commission organized an event titled “Climate Change & Our Future.” The event was held with the participation of our students and academics. (News link)
According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report 2024, Extreme Weather Events are listed as the second largest global threat. In line with proactive management to mitigate potential climate crises, and to ensure waste-free practices, recycling, and the continuity of sustainable campus applications, a training session on “Management and Recycling of Packaging Waste” was organized exclusively for cleaning staff. The training was held on February 29, 2024, at 10:00 in the Faculty of Science Nazım Terzioğlu Amphitheater, in collaboration with the Civil Servants Academy and the Zero Waste Coordination Unit. Our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Alptuğ Sarı was invited as a speaker to deliver a conference on “Turkey’s Rich Biodiversity” as part of scientific activities organized for students of 88th Year Republic Anatolian High School, Ortahisar, Trabzon. KTU celebrated Environment Week with various activities. At a workshop held in the KTU Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center, students created artworks from electronic waste, while the opening of the Compost Waste Production Unit established on the Kanuni Campus was also realized. In cooperation with the Environmental Problems Research and Application Center and the Climate Change and Environment Club, the “I Know My Responsibility, I Protect Nature” event was held on the KTU Kanuni Campus with the participation of teachers and students from Akçaabat Ahmet Ağanoğlu Primary School. The event included awareness activities and a field trip led by Assoc. Prof. Müberra Pulatkan, and a visit to the Wildlife Museum enriched by the presentation of Res. Asst. Mehmed Yunus Mengen. The event concluded with a tree planting activity supported by environmental staff and student club members. These activities, which contribute to educating younger generations with environmental responsibility, are regularly organized as part of the center’s community outreach initiatives. (News link)
