Low-income student support

Department of Health, Culture, and Sports

Within the scope of programs carried out by the Department of Health, Culture, and Sports, KTU provides a “Meal Scholarship” to support students’ nutrition needs and a “Financial Support Scholarship” to ease their educational expenses. In addition, our university offers accommodation opportunities with safe and affordable dormitory options to meet students’ housing needs.

Student Dormitories

KTU students benefit from comprehensive accommodation facilities managed by the Credit and Dormitories Institution (KYK). The Eastern Black Sea Student Dormitory, located on the central Kanuni Campus, consists of eight blocks with rooms for 1–3 students. Another KYK dormitory complex of four blocks is also available on the same campus. Additionally, KYK dormitories are located in Trabzon city center and in the districts of Akçaabat, Yomra, Sürmene, Of, and Maçka. This wide accommodation network ensures safe and affordable housing for students, thereby supporting equal access to education (see details).

Meal Scholarship

KTU provides a free lunch scholarship for students. In 2024, 400 students benefited from the meal scholarship. This support helps students meet their basic nutritional needs and sustain their academic success. The scholarships are funded by the Department of Health, Culture, and Sports, and applications are collected by the Scholarship and Aid Office at the beginning of each academic year. Students deemed eligible after socioeconomic assessment receive one free lunch meal per day. This practice directly contributes to increasing equal opportunities and alleviating the impacts of poverty (see details).

Health Services

KTU provides effective primary healthcare services to protect the physical and mental well-being of its students and staff. The Medico-Social Center, operating within the university, serves as the first point of contact for the basic health needs of students, academic, and administrative staff.

Services provided in this center are carried out under the assurance of the Social Security Institution (SGK) within the framework of Law No. 5510 on Social Insurance and General Health Insurance. If necessary, patients are referred to other health institutions for further examinations and treatments (see details).

Additionally, through the on-campus infirmary unit, the following services are provided:

  • Emergency medical interventions without conditions for service eligibility,
  • Provision of first aid and emergency response services,
  • Nursing services for physician-prescribed treatments (injections, dressings, etc.),
  • Basic health monitoring such as blood pressure and temperature measurements.

Psychological Counseling and Guidance Unit

The unit aims to support the mental, emotional, and social well-being of students and staff, helping them cope with challenges. It offers protective, preventive, and when necessary, intervention-based psychological support services. In 2024, 202 students received services from the Psychological Counseling and Guidance Unit (see details).

Main services provided include:

  • Individual and group psychological counseling,
  • Guidance supporting academic, social, and emotional development,
  • Psychological assessments and referrals,
  • Adaptation support and seminars.

Karadeniz University Development Foundation (KÜVAK) (https://www.kuvakfi.org.tr/)

The Karadeniz University Development Foundation (KÜVAK), operating for nearly 40 years to support education, research, and infrastructure at KTU, is a long-standing solidarity network established through public-private cooperation. The foundation provides the KÜVAK Scholarship to successful but financially disadvantaged students, thereby promoting equal access to education. Applications are conducted transparently through the KTU Information Management System (BYS), and candidates can easily apply via the KÜVAK Scholarship Application Portal. Through these programs, KÜVAK not only addresses students’ financial needs but also strengthens the social mission of the university.
