Minimizing alteration of aquatic ecosystems (plan)

Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) adopts a comprehensive approach to minimizing alterations to aquatic ecosystems across research, campus operations, and community engagement. The plan prioritizes protection of hydrological integrity, conservation of native biodiversity, prevention of habitat fragmentation, and evidence-based monitoring of water quality and biota. It further promotes nature-based solutions, low-impact infrastructure, and compliance with national legislation and international best practices.

Implemented measures include impact assessments for water-related projects, buffer zones and riparian restoration, stormwater and runoff control, pollution prevention (nutrients, plastics, and hazardous substances), and long-term ecological monitoring of priority freshwater and coastal sites. The plan supports SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 14 – Life Below Water, and SDG 15 – Life on Land.
