Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) has established a comprehensive system for managing organic waste generated across its campuses. As of 2024, the composting facility has become operational, processing organic waste collected from university dining halls, laboratories, and landscaping areas, and producing 2.10 tons of compost. The compost produced is used as organic fertilizer for maintaining the green areas of the campus. In addition, part of the organic waste continues to be collected by the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality and processed at the facilities of the Union for the Construction and Operation of Solid Waste Facilities of the Local Governments of Trabzon and Rize Provinces (TRABRİKAB) for biogas (methane) production. All organic waste generated on campus is treated through composting and biogas production processes, either on-site or through municipal facilities (TRABRİKAB). No untreated organic waste remains on campus. Therefore, the treatment level is considered extensive. This dual system both creates a circular process within the campus and strengthens collaboration with local authorities. The practice aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12-Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13-Climate Action.
