Plan to reduce energy consumption

Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) has adopted an institutional Energy Conservation Directive that aims to systematically reduce energy consumption across all its campuses. The directive includes a detailed section titled “Measures to Be Applied for Electricity Consumption Savings”, defining the implementation principles and responsibilities for all administrative and academic units.

Within this framework, KTU implements the following measures:

  • Regular inspection and maintenance of medium- and low-voltage electrical installations, transformers, compensation systems, and grounding measurements.
  • Optimization of lighting systems by removing unnecessary fixtures, cleaning luminaires to increase light efficiency, and preferring motion-sensor-based, energy-saving LED lighting systems.
  • Restriction of the use of electric heaters, stoves, and cookers; monitoring of air conditioning within designated temperature ranges (22–24°C in summer).
  • Minimization of outdoor and sports field lighting; avoidance of lighting for advertising purposes.
  • Procurement of high energy-efficiency equipment, ensuring that energy performance criteria are considered in purchasing processes.
  • Continuous awareness-raising and motivation of all staff regarding energy conservation practices.
  • Establishment of a data-based monitoring system for regular tracking of electricity, fuel, and water consumption.

Through this institutional plan, KTU aims to systematically reduce energy consumption, enhance operational energy efficiency, and strengthen the culture of sustainability among all members of the university community.
