Program To Limit Or Decrease The Parking Area On Campus

Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) implements a comprehensive and planned program to gradually reduce and transform parking areas across its campuses in line with sustainability, accessibility, and environmental quality principles. The university’s Policy to Reduce Parking Areas on Campus and Policy to Reduce the Number of Private Vehicles on Campuses provide the institutional framework for this process.

Within the scope of these policies, KTU aims to:

  • Reduce the overall number and surface area of parking zones;
  • Transform underused or unnecessary parking spaces into green areas, pedestrian zones, or social spaces;
  • Integrate parking management with sustainable mobility planning, including shuttle services, bicycle parking, and electric vehicle infrastructure;
  • Prioritize safety and accessibility, ensuring the development of barrier-free pedestrian and bicycle routes;
  • Maintain continuous monitoring and reporting through measurable performance indicators.

As of the latest period, the total parking area within the campus is 72,328 m², representing 6.2% of the total campus area (1,163,860.35 m²). KTU plans to gradually reduce this share by 20% within five years, converting approximately 750 m² of existing parking zones into green and social spaces each year.
