Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) implements a comprehensive policy to reduce paper and plastic usage across its campuses. In this context, digital transformation initiatives have been implemented in both administrative and academic processes, and paperless systems have been largely adopted in document management, certification, ethics committee applications, and correspondence. Additionally, awareness campaigns, training sessions, and student projects are regularly organized to reduce plastic waste and increase recycling rates within the campus community. The KTU Zero Waste Coordination Office plans, implements, and monitors all these activities in line with the university’s sustainability goals to promote effective waste reduction. Key programs implemented to reduce paper and plastic waste on campus include:
- Use of Electronic Document Management System (EDMS-EBYS) and e-signature applications to minimize paper consumption in correspondence.
- Digital submission of graduate theses to eliminate printed copies.
- Awareness campaigns to reduce the use of plastic bags on campus.
- Printing regulations encouraging double-sided printing and preventing unnecessary printouts.
- Establishment of online systems for surveys and forms by the Digital Transformation Office.
- Implementation of a Digital Certificate Management System to replace printed certificates with electronic ones.
- Digitalization of ethics committee application processes to reduce paper use.
- Certification of KTU with the Zero Waste Certificate by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, subject to regular audits.
- Production and publication of a Zero Waste promotional video by the Faculty of Health Sciences.
- Training program on packaging waste management and recycling organized by the Zero Waste Coordination Office.
- A project exhibition on zero waste and environmental protection held by the Vocational School of Health Services.
- Plastic cap collection campaigns organized periodically by Farabi Hospital staff.
- Plastic cap collection activity conducted by the Faculty of Letters, students, and residents of the Eastern Black Sea Girls’ Dormitory.
- Awareness session on zero waste organized for KTU staff by Sürmene Municipality.
