Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) supports quality education with its robust information access infrastructure provided to students and academics. The Central Library, created in 1986 by consolidating the libraries of faculties and departments on the Kanuni Campus, was named the Faik Ahmet Barutçu Library by Senate decision in 1988.
With its rich collection, modern infrastructure, qualified staff, and user-oriented services, the Faik Ahmet Barutçu Library is one of the leading technical libraries not only in the Black Sea Region but also in Türkiye. The library provides fast and easy access to information through an open-shelf system and the U.S. Library of Congress Classification System. All materials have been transferred to the digital cataloging system, and electronic resources are accessible remotely off-campus.
At the beginning of each academic year, orientation programs ensure effective use of library services, and user training sessions are organized for electronic information resources. In addition, special facilities such as the Audio/Group Study Room, Disabled Study Room, Information Screening Room, and 24/7 independent study halls provide suitable learning environments for academic studies.
Library services include access to printed and electronic resources, periodicals, theses, interlibrary cooperation, reference consultancy, and special collections. In particular, the Osman Turan Historical Research Library and the Theses Room make significant contributions to academic research.
Through these services, KTU increases access to knowledge, enhances academic success, and strengthens research culture in line with the university’s “Quality Education” goal. This structure enables KTU to offer a holistic learning experience that fosters not only academic knowledge but also critical thinking, ethical values, social responsibility, and digital literacy for students in different fields.
Currently, the library houses 127,921 printed books, 2,987 printed journals, 1,301,107 electronic books, 74,003 electronic journals, 1,982 CDs and DVDs, and 10,763 graduate theses. With this structure, the library supports KTU’s institutional educational framework and its vision to cultivate individuals equipped with knowledge, skills, and values for sustainable development in line with SDG-4: Quality Education.
