Sewage Disposal

Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) manages all wastewater generated across its campuses through an integrated system in cooperation with the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality and the Trabzon Water and Sewerage Administration (TİSKİ). Domestic and laboratory wastewater from all academic, administrative, dormitory, and hospital buildings is connected to the municipal sewage network and directed to the TİSKİ Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, where it undergoes tertiary (three-stage) treatment to ensure environmental safety and compliance with legal standards.

The treatment process includes:

• Pre-treatment within campus buildings (screening and sedimentation),

• Biological (secondary) treatment at the municipal facility,

• Final treatment, including filtration, nutrient removal, and disinfection.

KTU does not operate an independent wastewater treatment plant; instead, the entire campus sewage system is fully integrated into the municipal infrastructure. The effectiveness of this system is verified through TİSKİ’s annual Water Quality and Wastewater Reports, which confirm full compliance of discharge quality with national environmental regulations and EU environmental directives.

This practice aligns directly with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDGs 14 and 15: Life Below Water and Life on Land), supporting KTU’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible campus operations.
