The Faculty of Marine Sciences at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) conducts projects on sustainable fishing practices and the protection of marine resources. Within this scope, the faculty carries out scientific research as well as training sessions, seminars, and awareness activities in collaboration with local fishermen and communities. These activities not only promote the sustainable use of marine ecosystems but also contribute to raising awareness among local communities and enhancing environmental sensitivity in fisheries practices.
At the Sürmene Balıklı Fishermen’s Shelter, a survey was conducted to raise awareness and collect data on ghost nets and abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). The event was led by Prof. Dr. Fatma Telli Karakoç and Prof. Dr. Coşkun Erüz, with contributions from Prof. Dr. Hacer Sağlam, Dr. Neira Purwanty Ismail, and graduate student Melike Tüysüz.
During the event, one-on-one interviews were held with 20 fishermen. The participants showed great interest in the negative impacts of ghost nets and marine litter on marine ecosystems, asking questions and providing suggestions. The fishermen strongly supported the survey, and many expressed their willingness to contribute to the removal of ghost nets from the sea. (News link)
As part of the BlackNETs project, awareness-raising events are organized to inform society about the harm caused by ghost nets and abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) to marine ecosystems and species. These events aim to spread the project’s message on reducing ghost nets to wider audiences.
On December 17, 2024, a seminar was organized by the Trabzon Association for the Protection of Natural and Historical Values (DOĞA-TARİH) with a group of 30 participants, including academics, administrators, public officials, engineers, architects, educators, and other experts, for knowledge sharing and solution-oriented discussions. On December 20, 2024, an awareness event was held at the 88th Year Republic Anatolian High School with the participation of 142 students. The students were informed about ghost nets, destructive fishing, and their impacts on marine biodiversity through photos, videos, and briefing materials.
On March 6, 2024, a field study was conducted as part of the Population Dynamics course. Guided by Dr. Ahmet Şahin, students sailed from Çamburnu and carried out egg larva sampling and water analysis practices. Within the scope of the “Seminar Days” series organized by our faculty, the first seminar was held with invited speaker Prof. Dr. Teoman Ayhan. The seminar, titled “The Black Sea’s Toxic Treasure: Hydrogen Sulfide”, was attended by faculty members and students.
As part of the “Seminar Days” series, the fifth week seminar was delivered by Prof. Dr. Coşkun Erüz. The seminar, titled “Coastal Change and Habitat Losses in the Eastern Black Sea”, was held with the participation of faculty members and students.
