Toxic Waste Treatment

According to the 2024 Waste Declaration Form and laboratory records, Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) has processed a total of 1.259 tons of hazardous (toxic) waste in compliance with official waste management regulations.

This amount consists of:

• 0.049 tons of tther toxic waste (toners, mercury including substances, lamps etc.) R7 and R 12 method,

• 0.159 tons of infectious medical waste (disposed of through the D9 method),

• 1.051 tons of laboratory-derived chemical waste (solid and liquid; treated through chemical processing, neutralization, and incineration).

All hazardous wastes are collected separately at the source, temporarily stored in chemical-resistant dedicated containers, and processed at licensed treatment facilities operated by Evra Group, the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, and the Union of Local Governments of Trabzon and Rize for the Construction and Operation of Solid Waste Facilities (TRABRİKAB) under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. These operations are fully compliant with the Regulation on the Control of Hazardous Waste and the Zero Waste Regulation, demonstrating the University’s achievement of an over 85% recovery and disposal rate for toxic waste, thereby reinforcing its commitment to sustainable waste management.
