Within the scope of its sustainability policies, Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) has implemented water-conscious plant cultivation practices in campus landscaping, supported by improvements in water infrastructure and revisions to irrigation management. These initiatives aim to reduce water consumption, enhance ecological balance, and promote climate-resilient landscape design.
The main actions taken in this context include:
- Rearrangement of existing green areas using local and low-water-demand plant species, prioritizing ecological compatibility over purely aesthetic design.
- Implementation of water infrastructure improvements, installation of water consumption monitoring systems, and adoption of wastewater reuse policies in parallel with landscaping activities.
- Scientific reinforcement of these practices through academic research and student projects (facility studies, plant adaptation analyses, and sustainable landscape design projects); development of a local plant species database and studies on irrigation optimization.
Through these integrated measures, KTÜ promotes water conservation across its campuses, supporting both SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 15 – Life on Land.
