Trabzon to Be a Pilot City in EU-Funded Disaster Project
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ercüment Öztürk, a faculty member of our department, is taking part in an international project to develop a modular system that will meet shelter needs during disasters and serve social purposes at other times. The project team at KTÜ consists of four academics led by Prof. Dr. Ayfer Dönmez Çavdar, Head of the Department of Forest Industry Engineering. Submitted through TÜBİTAK to the Driving Urban Transitions to a Sustainable Future Partnership call under the EU’s Horizon Europe Programme, the project was one of 39 selected for funding from among 244 applications. Coordinated by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences with partners from Türkiye, Italy, Poland, and Spain, the work is expected to take approximately three years, with Trabzon, Naples, Barcelona, and Pozna? selected as pilot cities.
The project’s shelter cabins, made from bio-based materials, will provide safe assembly and shelter areas during disasters. Once normal life resumes, they can be adapted to other uses without requiring specialized craftsmanship. Dr. Öztürk stated that chronotopographic data will be analyzed with the help of artificial intelligence, possible scenarios will be examined digitally, and the system’s operation will be evaluated from start to finish using a digital twin. Life cycle analyses will also be used to minimize construction and installation costs.
