Mining Engineering Department was established in 1991, within the body of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Karadeniz Technical University, in order to gain explored and potential ore formations to the economy, to bring solutions for mining problems and to train qualified Mining Engineers. The curriculum and course contents includes theoretical courses, laboratory studies and technical computer application courses in order to provide education in parallel with their equivalents in the world and to keep up with the innovations of the era.
Our department, which started with very limited academic staff and laboratory facilities in the early years of its establishment and education, improved its opportunities in a short time. Currently, Ore&Coal Preparation and Evaluation, Mining Operations and Mine Mechanisation and Technology Divisions including 12 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, 3 Doctor Research Assistants and 3 Research Assistants continue its education life with its academic staff consisting of totally 23 lecturers.
In the Department of Mining Engineering, a compulsory Foreign Language Preparatory Class (English) was introduced in 2009. Correspondingly, a foreign language education program (in which 30% of the courses are instructed in English) started to be implemented. Those who are successful in the foreign language proficiency exam can directly enroll in the first year, while those who fail the exam receive one year of foreign language preparatory education.
Our department has been providing education in its new building since 2006-2007 academic year. The Department of Mining Engineering controls approximately 3000 square meters of space, which can be roughly divided into 4 functional sections. These include staff offices, classrooms with data shows, seminar room and study and club room for student education; laboratories for rock mechanics, cemented paste backfill, marble, aggregate and concrete, ventilation, and mineral processing; computer laboratory with 50 high-quality computers for undergraduate and graduate students. With these facilities offered to students, our department is among the most modern departments in our country that meets the objectives of the Mining Engineering Program.
Master's program was started in the 2001-2002 academic year, and doctoral program was started in the 2004-2005 academic year. Our department, which gave its first graduates in 1995, provides mining engineering education to approximately 200 students each year and has brought approximately 1000 mining engineers to our country so far.
