The Department of Civil Engineering, which was the first department in Karadeniz Technical University to accept enrolment and the fourth oldest civil engineering department in Turkey, started education on September 9, 1963. The department currently has six divisions which include Structures, Structural materials, Mechanics, Transportations, Geotechnics and Hydraulics. Following the opening of School of Foreign Languages in 2003, the department started offering courses in Turkish and English.
The Civil Engineering Department is a division dealing with education and research on the design, construction and operation of any type of structure used directly or indirectly in the daily life of human. Civil engineering is a broad engineering discipline with a curriculum providing a strong foundation in mathematics and physics followed by in-depth education in structures, mechanics, construction materials, geotechnical engineering, transportation and construction management. The main objective of the department is to provide the required knowledge for the rapidly developing science and technology, and to graduate engineers who are well educated and able to keep up with the ever-developing technology with the required knowledge and ability to put this knowledge into practice.
The department also offers master and doctoral programs for those wishing to further their studies.
