"5 Poets & 5 Questions: The Art of Poetry in the Discipline of Creative Writing" Event Held

As part of the English Poetry course, Dr. Özlem Çakmakoğlu, a research assistant in the department, organized an event titled “5 Poets & 5 Questions: The Art of Poetry in the Discipline of Creative Writing” to reinforce theoretical knowledge with creative applications. The event featured local Trabzon poets Kamuran Tuna, Bahaettin Kabahasanoğlu, Bahriye Kefelioğlu Bektaş, Emine Çolakoğlu, and Saadet Yılmaz as speakers. In the panel, which opened with remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız Çiçekçi discussed topics such as the creative process of poetry, the transformation of personal experiences into literary texts, the discipline of writing, and the concept of inspiration were discussed in depth. The head of the department, Prof. Dr. M. Naci Kayaoğlu, presented the panelists with a copy of the poetry book titled “All Children Are Innocent,” dedicated to Gaza and innocence, which was published as a result of a poetry competition organized nationwide by our department last year. The event aimed to increase the motivation of students interested in writing poetry and currently producing work in this field, deepen their technical knowledge, and help them find answers to questions they encounter in the writing process.

During the event, five poets with different aesthetic approaches and experiences answered the following five fundamental questions about the participants' poetry writing processes:

1. How do you start writing poetry? What is your source of inspiration? How and when do you obtain this inspiration?

2. How and to what extent should symbolism be used in poetry?

3. How do you know when a poem is finished? How do you decide when a poem is complete? Or is a poem never finished and remains unfinished?

4. What are your thoughts on poetry translations? Do you think a poem loses its essence when translated into another language?

5. How does the absence of titles in a poetry book affect the reader's experience?

Thanks to the comprehensive answers to these questions, students had the opportunity to discover the creative aspects of the art of poetry and develop their own writing practices. This gathering raised awareness that poetry is not only a form of expression but also a way of thinking and perceiving the world.
