Significant Contribution from our University to "Türkiye's Space Mission"

Our University made a significant contribution to "Türkiye's Space Mission" by adapting the IvmeRad (Smart and Active Online Radiation Monitor) project, developed by the Middle East Technical University (METU) IVMER, for the Galactic 07 mission. This adaptation was made to ensure it was suitable for space flight, in support of Türkiye's second astronaut, Tuva Cihangir ATASEVER, and his science mission on June 8, 2024, which will last 1.5 hours.

IvmeRad was initially developed by METU IVMER with TÜBİTAK support for real-time detection of ionizing radiation exposure levels in hospital radiology and cancer research units. It was revised in collaboration with our University to be suitable for the Galactic 07 space mission. The specially designed flight suit carrying IvmeRad will measure ionizing radiation doses throughout all phases of the mission. The data collected will be analyzed post-mission, contributing valuable insights to the scientific community.

"We Are Extremely Proud"

Commenting on the subject, our Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Çuvalcı expressed great pride on behalf of Karadeniz Technical University, stating, "IvmeRad is an advanced technological product capable of instantly measuring the levels of ionizing radiation that our astronauts are exposed to and rapidly analyzing this information. The development of this project, to which we have contributed, is crucial for the safety of our astronaut under the challenging conditions encountered in space. This recent work once again highlights our University's proficiency in scientific research and development. Our University aims to provide valuable contributions not only to our country's space efforts but also to the global scientific community. On this occasion, I extend my gratitude to Asst. Prof. Dr. Selcen Uzun Duran from KTU for her efforts in this project and wish her continued success in her work."
