BlackNETs Project Collaborates with HOPO's "Northern Kids Love Fishes" Project to Enhance Marine Science Education in Primary Schools

On April 29–30, 2025, a series of educational workshops was conducted under the BlackNETs project titled “Exorcising the Black Sea’s Silent Killers.” These workshops were organized in collaboration with the “One Project per School” (HOPO) initiative and the student-led campaign “Northern Kids Love Fishes.” Events took place at the Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences and Prof. İhsan Koz Primary School.

The project aims to raise awareness among students about the vital role of fish in a healthy diet, the importance of preserving marine ecosystems, and the principles of sustainable fishing. By promoting environmentally friendly habits such as consuming seasonal fish and recycling, the initiative aspires to help cultivate a generation of health-conscious and ecologically responsible individuals.

The workshops offered hands-on, experiential learning on key marine conservation topics, including water footprints, fishing gear, ghost nets, and the environmental impact of abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). Students engaged enthusiastically in interactive sessions—learning how to weave fishing nets, touring a fish pond and marine biology laboratory, and participating in a beach clean-up as part of the BlackNETs project's #GhostBuster campaign.
