Establishment and Development of the Department of Forestry Engineering at KTU

Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) was established in 1955 as the fourth university in Turkey by Law No. 6594. The inclusion of a forestry faculty within KTU occurred through Law No. 336 on September 19, 1963. However, due to various reasons, the establishment of the faculty took place in 1971. In this regard, a protocol was arranged between KTU Rectorate and Istanbul University (IU) Faculty of Forestry, which was signed on February 25, 1971, by the then Minister of National Education, Prof. Dr. Orhan OĞUZ, KTU Rector Prof. Dr. Ekrem GÖKSU, and IU Faculty of Forestry Dean Prof. Dr. Hayri BAYRAKTAROĞLU, thereby becoming definitive. This protocol, among various subjects, also includes the establishment of the Department of Forestry Engineering within KTU Faculty of Forestry. Established on February 25, 1971, the Department of Forestry Engineering commenced education under the support of the same faculty, as per a protocol signed with Istanbul University Faculty of Forestry, for the academic year 1971-1972. This protocol continued until the academic year 1977-1978. Since the academic year 1978-1979, the department has been educating students in the field of forestry with its own teaching staff.
