Visa Procedures

Different entry requirements may apply depending on your country of origin, nationality, bilateral agreements, and the purpose of your visit to Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) in Trabzon. These requirements may include an e-visa, a visa application through a consulate or embassy, a visa upon arrival, or entry with a national ID or passport.

If you are unsure whether you will need a visa to enter Türkiye, or the type of visa applicable to you, please consult the Turkish Government's official websites listed below:

  • General Information About Turkish Visas: www.mfa.gov.tr/default.en.mfa
  • Consular Procedures of the Republic of Türkiye: www.konsolosluk.gov.tr
  • Contact Information of Turkish Representations (embassy/consulate): www.mfa.gov.tr/turkish-representations.en.mfa
  • Visa Information for Foreigners: www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-forforeigners.en.mfa

E-Visa: To determine if you are eligible for an e-visa, visit www.evisa.gov.tr/en/info/. Eligibility criteria and application instructions are detailed on the site.

Consulate/Embassy Visa: If you are not eligible for an e-visa, you may need to apply for a visa through a Turkish embassy or consulate. Use www.mfa.gov.tr/turkish-representations.en.mfa to locate the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate. Pre-application and visa appointments can be arranged at www.konsolosluk.gov.tr.

Visa Upon Arrival: Citizens of specific countries meeting certain criteria may obtain a visa upon arrival. For more details on this option and to confirm eligibility, visit www.evisa.gov.tr/en/info/i-do-not-want-to-apply-for-an-e-visa-can-i-get-a-visa-on-arrival/.

National ID/Passport: Citizens of countries that are part of the "European Agreement on Regulations Governing the Movement of Persons between Member States of the Council of Europe" may enter Türkiye with their national ID. For a list of eligible countries, refer to www.mfa.gov.tr/default.en.mfa. Please note that if you plan to apply for a residence or work permit during your stay, entering with a valid passport is recommended for a smoother process.

Turkish citizens living abroad and holders of Mavi Kart only need a valid passport or ID card to enter Türkiye without requiring a visa or residence permit.

Staff: If you are planning to work at KTU as international staff, you are required to obtain a work visa and a residence permit prior to your arrival. If you are already in Türkiye with a valid residence permit for at least six months, you may apply for a work permit within the country without leaving. However, this does not apply to students residing in Türkiye on a student visa. For further assistance regarding your visa requirements, please contact your department at KTU.

Students: If you are an international student planning to study at KTU for more than three months, you are legally required to obtain a residence permit. This can be applied for after your arrival in Türkiye. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 60 days beyond your intended stay.

You may need an acceptance letter to apply for your visa. This letter will be issued after your application is approved by the relevant academic department at KTU.

Reminders:

  • Special visa or residence conditions may apply to non-EU/EEA citizens, even if they hold a residence permit from a European country.
  • As visa application processing times may vary, it is advised to submit your application as early as possible after receiving your letter of acceptance or invitation. Acceptance letters are provided once your application is approved by the relevant academic department at KTU.
  • Please note that the Erasmus Office at KTU does not handle visa applications. It is the responsibility of incoming staff, researchers, students, and visiting members to apply for their visas.
  • For updated entry requirements, visa procedures, and specific exemptions, refer to www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa.

Health Insurance

Having health insurance is a mandatory requirement for living in Türkiye. Without valid insurance covering your intended period of stay, you cannot apply for a residence permit. You can select one of the following health insurance options:

  1. General Health Insurance provided by SGK (Turkish Social Security Institution)
  2. Social security agreements between certain countries and SGK
  3. Private health insurance purchased in your home country or in Türkiye

General Health Insurance by SGK SGK, the Turkish Social Security Institution, is the government agency responsible for providing general healthcare services in Türkiye. By paying a monthly ?minimum premium amount,? you can obtain General Health Insurance (GSS) through SGK. This insurance allows you to access state hospitals and medical centers at no cost and some private hospitals at discounted rates. Before seeking treatment, confirm whether the hospital has an agreement with SGK. For more information about the insurance coverage, visit https://www.sgk.gov.tr/.

Students must apply in person at the SGK Directorate in Trabzon within 90 days of officially registering at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) to take advantage of the GSS.
