Karadeniz Technical University, Institute of Social Sciences, in accordance with the Higher Education Law No. 2547, started Master's education in 1998-1999 academic year and PhD education in 2006 with the opening of the Doctorate Program.

Admission and Registration Requirements
KTU Senate Decision No. 320/12 dated 15.06.2021 (Senate Principles on Application and Entrance Requirements for Graduate Programs) - KTU - Institute of Social Sciences Application Guide for Graduate Programs - Students who are accepted to the program from outside the field are required to attend the Scientific Preparatory Program and to be successful in the courses determined according to their graduation status.
Purpose of the Program
The master's program helps the student to gain the ability to access, evaluate and interpret information by conducting scientific research.
Recognition of Prior Learning
In order to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting and adjustment of the gains acquired by students enrolled in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University outside a higher education institution, the Senate Decision dated 28.07.2023 and numbered 340 "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning" was adopted and entered into force. The Directive includes; * Recognition of knowledge, skills and competencies gained with special interest through exemption exams to be counted instead of program courses, * Recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be counted instead of program courses, * Crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions in line with their special interests. The announcement of the courses included in the recognition of prior learning, the receipt and evaluation of applications are made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of Prior Learning will offer many benefits to our students and employers. For our students; increasing professional development and mobility in the labor market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, increasing student motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the point of view of employers, it will contribute to the elimination of skill or qualification deficiencies in the workplace, to reduce the time that employees will spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus to the more efficient use of resources.
Requirements and Rules for the Degree to be Earned
The program is four semesters and can be extended to a maximum of six semesters. At the end of the fourth semester at the latest, at least eight courses, one of which must be in English from the compulsory and elective courses in the curriculum, seminar course and ?Scientific Research and Publication Ethics? course (non-credit), provided that the total is not less than 24 credits (120 ECTS), and at the end of the sixth semester at the latest, the thesis study must be carried out and the thesis defense exam must be found sufficient (See KTU Graduate Education and Training Regulations).
Exams, Measurement and Grading
For each course, students are subjected to midterm exam, midterm study (project, seminar, quiz, homework or a second midterm exam) and final exam. The contribution of the midterm exam to the success grade of the course is 30%, the contribution of the in-semester work is 20% and the contribution of the final exam is 50%. All exams are evaluated out of 100 points. In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, he/she must have received at least a letter grade of "CC" as a final grade.

Graduation Requirements In order to graduate from the master's program; - At least eight courses, including the compulsory courses of the program, one of which is in English, seminar course and "Scientific Research and Publication Ethics" course (non-credit) must be successfully completed by the end of the fourth semester at the latest, - The thesis work must be successfully completed by the end of the sixth semester at the latest.

Department Facilities
Facilities of the Department of History are as follows: 6 professors, 5 associate professors, 10 dr. lecturers, 1 lecturer and 7 research assistants work in the department. There are 20 rooms for academic staff. There are also 3 classrooms, 2 technology classrooms and 1 Archive Room.
