KTU students create NFTs in cultural heritages
In recent years, blockchain technologies and their products have attracted a lot of attention around the world. With blockchain and digital assets, NFTs (Non-Fungible Token), which are considered a product of blockchain technology, have entered our lives. Karadeniz Technical University has created its first NFTs as well. In this process, Karadeniz Technical University completed the conversion of the Istikbal newspaper, one of our cultural heritages in the Faik Ahmet Barutçu Library, into NFT and published the digital collection.
Karadeniz Technical University took its first step into the world of NFT and created a corporate account on an NFT marketplace. The copies of the Istikbal newspaper, which is considered a rare work of our cultural heritage, were converted into NFT over the Ethereum (ETH) network on an NFT platform.
Meltem TURAN, a senior student studying in the Department of Management Information Systems at Karadeniz Technical University, carried out the aforementioned study within the scope of her graduation project. Her project aimed to promote our cultural heritage in national and international media and protect rare artifacts. Thanks to her project, Karadeniz Technical University has become one of the few universities that convert its rare works to NFT through the blockchain and present its products in the digital environment.
What is NFT?
NFT, short for Non-Fungible Token, stands for "Qualified Intellectual Property" or "Immutable Token." It is a name given to unique assets, which makes them valuable. NFT assets produced using blockchain technology are mostly produced with Ethereum standards.
NFTs, which first started as a part of the Ethereum blockchain in their emergence, can also be defined as a certificate or registration document for owning digital artifacts. NFT assets traded through smart contracts enable digital artifacts to be converted into verifiable and unmatchable assets on the blockchain. These assets, which represent a unique asset on their own, can also be registered and converted into crypto assets. NFTs, which are frequently used especially in the fields of art and sports, have a market volume of billions of dollars today.
